Healthy weight for children

Childhood is a time of growth. Eating a healthy diet and being active is very important to ensure that children reach their potential and remain at a healthy weight as they grow.  

As with adults excessive weight is the result of too much of the wrong sorts of foods and beverages and not enough physical activity.

Determining whether a child is overweight requires taking into account various factors and can include checking their weight and height for their age over time on a child growth chart.

Children who are overweight

For children who are overweight, parents need to consider the types and amount of food their child is eating and how much physical activity they are doing, rather than focusing on weight. 

The best approach is for the whole family to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes enjoying being active and eating healthy food.

A child is more likely to be overweight if one or both of their parents are overweight. 

Also, overweight children are more likely to become overweight adults. So, getting in early to either prevent overweight or respond early if you are concerned about your child’s weight is good insurance for the future.
