Patient Incident Management and Open Disclosure
The open disclosure of incidents is an important part of the incident management process and is essential to a patient centred model of care
Participation in training helps SA Health meet the requirements of the Australian Open Disclosure Framework, and ensures that staff have the skills for open, timely and honest communication with patients following an adverse event or incident.
The Cognitive Institute Open Disclosure workshops are delivered by clinicians using rehearsal and debriefing methods. Evaluation of the 2019 workshops indicated that SA Health staff, across professions and clinical divisions, found the training beneficial as it expanded their knowledge of the open disclosure process and extended their confidence and practical skills.
SA Health staff interested in open disclosure workshops should contact their local Safety and Quality team within their local health network or state-wide health service for advice regarding future open disclosure training activities.
