Motivational Interviewing training course

Suitable for all mental health clinicians

3 ½  hour Zoom or face to face course.

Facilitated by SA Mental Health Training Centre. See Mental health training calendar page for workshop dates.

Workshop aims

This workshop is designed for mental health practitioners working in Public Mental Health Services. Motivation is the reason why people do the things they do. Motivational interviewing is a counselling approach based on the principle that all human behaviour is motivated. It acknowledges that many people experience ambivalence when deciding to make changes – they both want and don’t want to change. It also acknowledges that people can perceive both the advantages and disadvantages of changing, or continuing, with their current behaviour. The aim is not to immediately focus on the action of changing, but working to enhance motivation to change.

Workshop outcomes

  • what underlies the power of the motivational interviewing technique
  • how to encourage the client to talk herself or himself into changing their behaviour, rather than having it suggested or advised by someone else.
