Surgeons at the Royal Adelaide Hospital successfully performed Australia’s first implant of a 3D-printed polymer breastbone in a patient. The eight-hour surgery was performed on a patient who has been battling cancer for a long time.

In order to remove a tumour involving the sternum, the surgery involved removing the patient’s sternum and replacing it with a new 3D-printed one. The artificial breastbone was designed according to the patient’s anatomical specifications.
