Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (Acute)
SALHN provides Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) as a critical component of its acute mental health services.
Currently, the Margaret Tobin Centre at FMC has an 8-bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit. This unit offers a secure and specialised environment for individuals experiencing the most acute and severe phases of their mental illness, requiring intensive monitoring and treatment.
Recognising the increasing need for these specialised services, SALHN is actively expanding its PICU capacity. A major redevelopment at the Margaret Tobin Centre is underway, which will include a brand new 12-bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, increasing the total PICU beds at this site.
This expansion is part of a larger initiative to enhance mental health infrastructure and provide timely, high-quality care for those in acute crisis within the southern Adelaide region. The new PICU is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
Morier Ward (Acute)
For mental health professionals seeking a dynamic and acute inpatient setting, the Morier Ward at Noarlunga Hospital offers a valuable opportunity.
As a 20-bed acute psychiatric unit (16 open, 4 High Dependency-closed beds), the Morier Ward provides initial and ongoing assessment and treatment for adults aged 18 to 65 experiencing severe episodes of mental illness.

The Mental Health Short Stay Unit is an 8-bed unit located at FMC, adjacent to the Margaret Tobin Centre. The unit provides 24-hour, seven-day-a-week care for individuals requiring timely mental health crisis interventions and acute care.
It is designed for patients who have been assessed as not needing emergency medical or toxicology care, but require a short period of stabilisation and assessment. The unit supports individuals needing care for up to 48 hours.
The aim of the Mental Health Short Stay Unit is to provide a focused and rapid response to acute mental health presentations, facilitating timely assessment, treatment initiation, and appropriate onward referral or discharge.
This service plays a vital role in the broader mental health service system within SALHN by providing an alternative to longer inpatient stays for suitable individuals, and supporting flow within the acute mental health services.
Consultant Liaison Services (Acute)
Consultant Liaison Psychiatry Services play a vital role in integrating mental and physical healthcare across its various sites, including Flinders Medical Centre and Noarlunga Hospital.
This service involves specialist mental health professionals, including psychiatrists and mental health nurses, who provide expert consultation, assessment, and management recommendations for patients with co-occurring mental and physical health conditions who are being treated in general medical and surgical settings.
The Consultant Liaison team works collaboratively with medical, surgical and nursing staff to identify and address the mental health needs of patients, ensuring holistic and integrated care. Their expertise helps in the diagnosis and management of psychological distress, adjustment disorders, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues that can arise in the context of physical illness or injury.
By providing timely and specialised mental health input, the Consultant Liaison Service aims to improve patient outcomes, enhance communication between healthcare teams, and facilitate appropriate referrals for ongoing mental health support when needed.

The Centre for Anxiety and Related Disorders (CARD) specialises in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) within the stepped care model for patients with anxiety and related disorders.
Located in the southern region, CARD offers tailored outpatient treatment to meet individual needs. In addition to outpatient services, CARD provides a statewide inpatient programme for up to two weeks following assessment. Referrals to CARD are accepted exclusively from healthcare professionals such as GPs, nurses, allied health, and other specialists.
Gambling Services (Statewide)
SALHN's Gambling Services provide support to individuals and families affected by gambling-related harm across South Australia. Collaborating closely with the Statewide Gambling Therapy Service (SGTS) located at FMC and GP Plus Elizabeth, these services offer evidence-based therapies like CBT and culturally sensitive support.
Professionals working within SALHN's mental health teams assist with initial assessments and support, linking clients with financial counselling and other services through partnerships with organisations like Relationships Australia SA.

Aboriginal Gambling Therapy Service (AGTS)
The AGTS offers personalized CBT to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals experiencing problem gambling and related mental health issues. Referrals are accepted from self-referrals, family members, or healthcare professionals. AGTS operates from two locations: Block G4 at “The Flats” (Flinders Medical Centre) and GP Plus Health Care Service in Elizabeth.
Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT)
The IAPT programme offers short-term psychological treatments for individuals referred from various departments, including the Emergency Department at Flinders Medical Centre and Noarlunga Hospital, Consultation Liaison Psychiatry, Social Work, and Southern Acute and Noarlunga Acute Community Mental Health Team.
It addresses mild to moderate symptoms such as emotional distress, social crises, suicidal ideation, self-harm, anxiety, and depression. Patients currently engaged with community mental health services, under 18 years old, or primarily dealing with substance use or homelessness are generally not suitable for follow-up care.
FPTS Inpatient Programme
The FPTS Inpatient Programme provides statewide services for up to two weeks for consumers with anxiety and related disorders, as well as gambling and gaming disorders. Treatment is offered following assessment to address specific needs in a structured environment.
Older Persons Mental Health Services (Statewide)

Statewide Eating Disorder Service (Statewide)
The Statewide Eating Disorder Service (SEDS) is a dynamic, science-focused multidisciplinary team that provides assessment, care planning and intensive treatment for those experiencing an eating disorder residing in South Australia.
The inpatient program based at FMC provides intensive 24/7 treatment and care firmly focused on a recovery model with the foundation of medical and psychological wellbeing. Our outpatient day program based in Brighton delivers intensive, community-based treatment four days a week for people experiencing challenges in recovery though individual treatment.
Individual treatment plans compliment the group therapy and meal support components of the program. Individual outpatient treatment is focused primarily on adolescents and their carers, providing evidence-based treatment for individuals and families.
As a statewide service we accept enquiries and provide consultation for GPs, Public Health and NGOs, as well as people seeking information for themselves or a loved one.
SEDS is a service based on scientific principles, reflective of and informing contemporary best practice. Research is crucial to the service, with a research officer embedded in the workforce to support both our service evaluation and literature publication.
SEDS is fortunate to partner with local, national and international tertiary education and health services as we strive to improve treatment and access for those experiencing an eating disorder. Recognising the important role of carers, we facilitate regular evidence-based workshops for this group.
Ongoing education and clinical supervision for all disciplines is provided, and applicants from a background not specific to eating disorders are welcome and will join a team environment that ensures learning and growth in this specialist field.
Repat Neurobehavioral Unit (Statewide)
The Repat Neuro-Behavioural Unit (RNBU) is a specialist transitional unit which provides assessment and treatment for people who experience severe to extreme behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD).
The unit provides a dementia-enabling environment which has been designed to ensure the best possible care to support ongoing care delivery, and to enable transition to community based care. The unit has 3 separate pods, with each pod providing care to 6 residents.
As part of a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to comprehensive assessment, evidence-based treatment, and the implementation of innovative behavioural management strategies. All members of the multi-disciplinary team will ensure the person, and their family/carers are central to care planning.
The RNBU is located at the Repat Health Precinct in Daw Park.
SALHN Specialist Community Mental Health Services
SALHN Specialist Community Mental Health Service provides care in the community outside of a hospital setting. Services are provided to people aged from 16 up to 64 years (services for consumers aged 65 years plus are provided by the Older Persons Mental Health Service).
SALHN’s community service sites are at Marion and Noarlunga. Services are also provided for and with individuals in their own homes. The services provided include assertive care, clinical support services and an acute crisis response service seven days a week.
Care is delivered by multidisciplinary teams comprised of a range of clinicians dedicated to providing specialist mental health support for people in the community with a mental illness and families/carers.
SALHN Specialist Community Mental Health Service forms part of a broader network of specialist inpatient and community mental health, and primary and secondary care services operating within the South Australian health system.
The service operates in partnership with both government and non-government agencies to deliver integrated and comprehensive interventions.
Hospital in the Home (Community)
Hospital in the Home program offers a dynamic and innovative environment for healthcare professionals seeking to provide acute-level care within patients' own residences.
As part of the team, you would play a crucial role in delivering a range of medical, nursing, and allied health services to individuals who meet specific criteria, allowing them to receive treatment safely and effectively outside of the traditional hospital setting.
This model of care emphasises patient comfort, independence, and a personalised approach. Working in Hospital in the Home requires strong clinical assessment skills, excellent communication abilities, and the capacity for autonomous practice within a supportive team framework.
You would be involved in delivering treatments such as Clozapine titration, allied health interventions, rehabilitation therapies, and close monitoring of patients with acute and sub-acute conditions.
