International Medical Graduates
International Medical Graduates (IMG) Recruitment
SA Health no longer offers a specific recruitment process for IMGs
SA Health needs to consider local graduates prior to considering international candidates. In accordance with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection requirements, SA Health is required to give priority to applicants who are either Australian permanent residents or Australian Citizens in the first instance. It is anticipated that opportunities for IMG employment will continue to reduce.
SA Health has established a specific SA Medical Recruitment web tile which provides further details about recruitment opportunities with SA Health for all medical officer positions as well as a range of other information you may find helpful.
SA Health is unable to accept applications via email - applications are only accepted for advertised vacancies. All SA Health vacancies are advertised on SA Health Careers website Applicants will need to apply for each vacancy if the criteria is met.
The likelihood of obtaining employment in a South Australian Hospital without first completing an internship in the country where medical training was completed is very remote. Applicants are strongly advised to complete an internship in their home country, gain a few years of post-graduate experience and then apply through the Australian Medical College process.
Pathways to work in Australia can be found on the Australian Medical Council
Information about the registration process can be obtained from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
Competent Medical Authority Candidates or candidates who have already obtained experience in Australia, may be eligible for opportunities through the Additional Medical Recruitment Campaigns.
If you completed Medical school at an overseas campus of an Australian university or are on the Competent Authority Pathway AND have completed an internship overseas you may be eligible to apply for a position via the Basic Vocational or Prevocational Trainee Medical Officer (PGY2+) Recruitment tile on the SA Health Careers website.
Area of Need
The Area of Need program supports health service providers who are experiencing a medical workforce shortage and can demonstrate that they have been unable to recruit an Australian-trained medical practitioner to the vacant position. It was established to assist in the provision of general practice and specialist medical services to locations in South Australia that have limited access to such services.
If a position is declared an Area of Need, the Medical Board of Australia can grant limited medical registration to a suitable IMG into that position under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (SA) Act 2010, and provided they meet all other registration requirements required by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
The following criteria must be demonstrated by the requesting body to meet the requirements for an Area of Need position:
- a genuine vacancy exists
- the provision of medical services would fall below an acceptable level if the vacancy was not filled
- the market has been tested. The Australian medical community needs to have had the vacancy brought to its attention (e.g. relevant advertising). SA MET and SA Health must be satisfied that there is no appropriately qualified Australian-trained medical practitioner to appoint to the position.
