The Critical Care Skills Program will enable registered nurses and midwives to gain accelerated knowledge of clinical skills relevant for safe delivery of care in intensive care and high dependency.

This course consists of twelve self-paced modules of online active learning with self-assessment focused on the care of the deteriorating or critically ill patient requiring critical care nursing skills and knowledge. Each of the twelve modules will be one to two hour/s focused on achieving learning outcomes.

The twelve online modules will draw from case studies to move through the critical care patient journey from their presentation with acute respiratory and/or haemodynamic deterioration.

Course content

Module 1: Core principles in assessing severe acute respiratory infection
Module 2: Management of hypoxic respiratory failure
Module 3: Arterial blood gas analysis and interpretation
Module 4: Cardiac rhythm interpretation
Module 5: 12-lead ECG interpretation
Module 6: Airway management using rapid sequence intubation
Module 7: Invasive ventilation principles
Module 8: Invasive ventilation management
Module 9: Haemodynamic monitoring
Module 10: Haemodynamic support
Module 11: Neurological support
Module 12: Care of the sedated ventilated patient

The course is comprised of:

  • 12 interactive tutorials
  • 12 end of tutorial assessments (5 questions each)
  • 11 case studies
