Port Augusta Hospital unregistered doctor review

Findings and recommendations from SA Health’s investigations into an unregistered doctor at the Port Augusta Hospital have been released following two thorough and independent reviews.

SA Health accepts all recommendations made and is working with local health networks as well as the Department for Health and Wellbeing’s workforce team to implement them.

The reviews were commissioned after the overseas-trained doctor worked without registration in the Port Augusta emergency department for six days between Monday April 24 and Tuesday 2 May 2023, before being removed from the premises.

The doctor had been offered a place as an intern and had been undertaking limited education sessions and staying in accommodation provided by Flinders and Upper North Local Health Network, pending the arrival of his registration.

The first report by Henderson Horrocks was commissioned to understand how the doctor was able to access the hospital. The second investigation by Professor Alan Sandford AM focused on the policies and processes which led to the doctor being considered as a suitable prospective employee.
