Visitors during COVID-19

The safety and wellbeing of people in our hospitals and facilities during COVID-19 is of paramount importance. To help protect our patients, visitors, staff, volunteers, and community from COVID-19 we are continually monitoring the current situation and have recently made the following changes to our visitor guidelines.

Adult inpatients

Two visitors are allowed per day during established visiting hours across all general wards.

One visitor per day is allowed for patients in ambulatory treatment units, critical care units, outpatients, and emergency departments.

Where appropriate, and safe, an exemption for additional visitors may be granted by calling Modbury Hospital on (08) 8161 2000 or Lyell McEwin Hospital on (08) 8182 9000 and asking to speak with the ward or clinical area responsible for the patient’s care.

Palliative, end of life or critically unwell patients or patients who would benefit from visitation (i.e. patients with dementia, feeding requirements or NDIS)

Two individuals are allowed to visit a patient at a time. Where appropriate and safe an exemption for increased visitor numbers may be obtained by calling Modbury Hospital on (08) 8161 2000 or Lyell McEwin Hospital on (08) 8182 9000 and asking to speak with the ward or clinical area responsible for the patient’s care (this is applicable to carers and visitors).

Paediatric inpatients: two visitors per patient during normal visiting hours.

Outpatients and emergency: one individual per person may accompany a patient to an Emergency Department or outpatient appointment, providing physical distancing can be maintained.

For all maternity services visitor guidelines please visit COVID-19 Visitor Guidelines at NALHN for maternity services.

Confirmed or suspected COVID-19 patients

No visitors are to enter the room of a hospitalised adult patient with, or suspected of having, COVID-19. There is an exemption process available in the case of end of life visits.

Only the support person/partner will be permitted to enter a room of a maternity patient positive for, or under suspicion for COVID-19. All COVID-19 positive birthing patients will be supported to have their COVID-19 positive birthing partner present at birth. The birthing partner will be required to wear appropriate PPE.

A maximum of one visitor for the patient’s hospital stay will be permitted to enter the room of a hospitalised paediatric patient, positive or suspected of COVID-19.

Cases will be assessed on an individual basis, with exemptions obtained from the patient’s healthcare team.
