The Healing Power of Art
25 September 2025
The soothing colours of nature, as interpreted by Year 6 art students from Pedare Christian College, now adorn the walls of a busy ward at Modbury Hospital.
The school’s Year 6 visual art class studied indigenous art and explored the cultural traditions and contemporary practices of indigenous Australian artists.
Ten of their artworks were recently donated to the hospital and can be seen on the walls of the Short Stay General Medical Unit.
Nurse Unit Manager Deb Lewington says the batik-inspired artworks depicting natural elements, such as leaves and foliage, are a favourite with staff. She says the nature tones are eye-catching but calming and provide a pop of colour around many corners.
Art teacher Emily Kenny is proud that students’ efforts will enhance the hospital environment and give patients and staff an opportunity to reflect.
“Art can brighten someone’s day, uplift a healing space and transform the atmosphere of a room,” she says.
