Retiring after 50 years of service
22 July 2025
It’s been a 50-year journey for Cheryl (left) working in health – a journey that started with nursing training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital back in 1975.

“I had very good teachers, and at the end of my nurse training I had the option of intensive care or midwifery – and I chose midwifery as I wanted to work in country health,” says Cheryl.
As it happens, Cheryl trained as a midwife here at Lyell McEwin Hospital and stayed on for the next half-century! While not exactly country health, of course women from Gawler to as far as Clare and Yorke Peninsula come to Lyell McEwin Hospital to have their babies.
“The team here is great, and several of the staff I’ve worked with over many years, and we work well together.”
“It certainly is much busier these days. Our local community is one of the fastest growing in SA,” she says.
Cheryl has very much enjoyed her work, giving joy to young parents and supporting them to birth, as well as providing training to midwifery students and junior midwives.
Cheryl retires in July this year and is planning on travelling to Ireland and Scotland with her partner. Best wishes Cheryl, and thank you for your dedication.
