New after-hours GP clinics are making it easier for young Aboriginal people to access health care.

NALHN’s Watto Purrunna Aboriginal Primary Health Care Service has added two evening clinics for young Aboriginal people and students who find it difficult to attend appointments during business hours.

Medical Head of Unit Dr Md Moniruzzaman says the clinics were introduced in July with funding from the Adelaide Primary Health Network.

“Research consistently shows that Aboriginal adolescents and young adults access primary health care at lower rates than their non-Aboriginal peers, due to a combination of cultural, systemic and social barriers,” he says.

“The After-Hours Youth Clinic was developed in response to these disparities, offering flexible, culturally safe and youth-friendly access to primary care services.”

The clinics run at Wonggangga Turtpandi (Port Adelaide) on Tuesday evenings until 8pm and at Muna Paiendi (Elizabeth Vale) every Wednesday evening until 8pm.

The appointment-only service is in addition to the Monday-to-Friday 9am to 4pm walk-in services at both sites. Other Aboriginal clients can access the evening service if appointments are available.

Watto Purrunna provides free primary health care – medical, allied health, family support services and health promotion programs - for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
