The Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN) is strengthening its commitment to accessible, person‑centred care with an important update to its Video‑on‑Demand Interpreting Services trial. Launched in July 2025 by the NALHN Interpreter Services Department in partnership with 2 M Language Services, this innovation is making communication clearer and safer for patients and families who prefer a language other than English.

The system provides 24/7 access to qualified interpreters through a dedicated iPad or secure web‑based app. Clinicians can connect with an interpreter within moments, ensuring timely, interactive language support during after‑hours periods, busy times and emergency situations – times when we might otherwise struggle to fulfill a need.

The trial began in partnership with the Lyell McEwin Hospital (LMH) Emergency Department, where staff and patients shared strong, positive feedback. Instant access to interpreters reduced delays, improved understanding and helped patients feel more confident and informed about their care.

Following this successful pilot, NALHN is now expanding the service across the network as an additional communication tool, with Modbury Hospital Triage, LMH Triage, Outpatients and Social Work on board. For culturally diverse communities in Adelaide’s north, one of the most multilingual regions in South Australia, this expansion carries real impact. Families who speak Arabic, Dari, Vietnamese, Swahili, Punjabi and many other languages can now participate more fully in conversations about their health. It also means greater privacy, dignity and independence, without relying on family members to translate sensitive information.

The service demonstrates NALHN’s commitment to accurate, respectful and person‑centred care, and, most importantly, strengthens safety and equity.
