Clinical trials - information for participants

What is a clinical trial?

A clinical trial is a research study involving human participants to investigate a new treatment and its effects on health outcomes. In Australia, clinical trials are required to be conducted according to strict guidelines to ensure the rights, safety and wellbeing of participants is protected.

Clinical research trials are conducted at major public hospitals and other institutions across South Australia. Clinical trials rely on volunteers from the general public to donate their time to participate in these trials. Results from clinical trials may contribute to improvements in preventing, detecting, treating or managing certain diseases or medical conditions.

The World Health Organization defines a clinical trial as ‘any research study that prospectively assigns human participants or groups of humans to one or more health-related interventions to evaluate the effects on health outcomes’.
