Community Pharmacy Expanded Scope of Practice

Under the Community Pharmacy Expanded Scope of Practice initiative, South Australians will be able to access advice and treatment for a broader range of common acute conditions and health and wellbeing services from authorised community pharmacists.

Pharmacists are highly qualified and trusted members of our healthcare system. Expanding their scope of practice gives the community greater access and choice to get the healthcare they need, while also helping to reduce pressure across our busy health system. This will also bring South Australia’s community pharmacy services into closer alignment with those interstate, helping ensure fairer and easier access.

Community Pharmacy Expanded Scope of Practice has been legally enabled in South Australia. For a pharmacist to provide these services, they must meet the requirements outlined in Regulation 17A of the Controlled Substances (Poisons) Regulations 2011 and Community Pharmacist Prescribing Code (PDF 709KB). A small number of community pharmacies are expected to begin offering these services from early 2026, with more pharmacies coming on board later in the year and in early 2027.
