WCHN has further shown its commitment to improving the health outcomes of Aboriginal women, Aboriginal babies and their families by opening the first purpose built unit for the Aboriginal Family Birthing Program (AFBP) in South Australia. This culturally safe space enhances the work of the AFBP multidisciplinary team. The AFBP team and this new unit are making a real difference to Aboriginal families and health outcomes.


Finalist  Aboriginal Health Scholarship Program

Aboriginal Health, DHW

The Aboriginal Health Scholarship program celebrates 20 years supporting Aboriginal people studying health degrees. The Program has increased the number of qualified Aboriginal health professionals in South Australia with 123 graduates. The Program contributes to SA Health’s strategic priorities to create a culturally safe environment and strengthen partnerships to increase the number of Aboriginal people in the health workforce. The Program demonstrates reconciliation in action.


Finalist — Riverland Aboriginal Youth Development Group

Riverland Aboriginal Health Team, Riverland Mallee Coorong LHN

Born in response to helping local Aboriginal youth cope with grief and loss following a young local Aboriginal’s suicide, The Aboriginal Youth Development Group program, created by the Riverland Aboriginal Health Team, has become an effective mechanism for addressing behavioural concerns and social isolation amongst local Aboriginal youth, fostering connections with each other, their community and local health services, improving their sense of identity, self-esteem and regard for their health.
