Watson Explorer Application Online Help

Welcome to the Watson Explorer application. These help pages will teach you how to use the Watson Explorer application and describe what you can expect from each Widget.

Standard Navigation

The following standard navigation features appear on all Watson Explorer application pages:

Login/Logout

Before using the Watson Explorer application, you must login using your standard LDAP credentials. Once logged in, your user identity will be used to deliver content that is relevant to you. If you are unsure of your username or password, please contact your internal IT team. To logout, close your current browser session.

Navigating the Watson Explorer Application

The Watson Explorer application includes intuitive navigation features to help you move from page to page. The "" link (usually your company logo) that appears in the top left hand corner of all pages in the Watson Explorer application returns you to your personal homepage.

Some widget links navigate you to other pages of the Watson Explorer application. For example, clicking one of the links in the widget will take you to the Watson Explorer application account page for the selected account.

The Help link that you used to navigate to this page is available on all Watson Explorer application pages.

The Watson Explorer application delivers personalized business content and links. Most widgets will provide you with an overview of the data collected and links to the source application (the software application that generated the event, for example: Microsoft SharePoint) for further investigation. When these links are clicked, you will navigate directly to the part of the source application that the information was pulled from.

There are two types of Watson Explorer application page, dynamic and static. Dynamic Watson Explorer application pages have their content defined and manipulated by the user. Static Watson Explorer application pages are automatically generated and deliver information that is associated with a specific item (for example: Account, User, or Product). The following pages are available for your installation of the Watson Explorer application:

  • Home page: This dynamic page displays content that you are interested in. The items that you are following are used to populate the content of the widgets on this page.
  • Item page: This static page displays content that is associated with a specific item in the application.
  • Workspace page: This user created dynamic page displays content on all the items that have been added to the page.
  • Search Page: This dynamic page returns search results from the data repositories that are monitored by the Watson Explorer application.
  • List page: These static pages display an index of a specific type of item.

Customizing the Watson Explorer Application

Customizing the Look and Feel of the Watson Explorer Application

Some pages in the Watson Explorer application can be customized. Customizing a page in the application includes defining which widgets are displayed on a page and the location of each widget on the page.

You can edit the page layout for a page by selecting Edit page layout from the user menu, which is located in the right column of the header by default. If the page you are on cannot be edited, the option will not be available.

When you are in edit mode, the Widget Bar becomes visible. The Widget Bar displays all of the widgets that can be used on this page.

The widget bar lets you modify which widgets will be displayed on the page, and where those widgets appear on the page.

You can change the location of a widget on the page by dragging the header of the widget to a new location.

You can add an available widget to the page by dragging the widget from the widget bar to any location on the page. Widgets that are unavailable or that are already on the page are grayed out.

You can remove a widget from the page by clicking the close icon in the header of the widget.

Each change that you make to a page layout is automatically saved. You can reset the page layout to the default settings by clicking "Reset to default" in the Widget Bar.

When you have finished modifying the page layout, click "Done" to close the widget bar and return to the page.

What is a widget?

A widget is a part of the Watson Explorer application code that delivers content in a page to you based on the settings for that widget.

Each page visited in the Watson Explorer application is a collection of data that is specific to the subject of that page. Different types of information is delivered to you depending on what the subject of the page is. For example on your home page the subject is you, so all the information displayed are items that are relevant to you. On an item page the subject is the specific item, only information relating to that item is displayed.

You can find an item by typing its name in the search box or by using the list page links at the top of the page.

You can follow an item by navigating to its page and clicking the button. If hovercards are enabled in your application, you can hover over an item's name on a list page and click the Follow button in the hovercard.

You are automatically logged out of the Watson Explorer application when you close your browser session.
