Referral guidelines
For admission or urgent advice in office hours contact the Dermatology Registrar;
Flinders Medical Centre (08) 8204 5511
All referrals must provide:
- Provisional diagnosis
- Description of the rash or lesion, including duration
- Treatment to date
- Relevant investigations/biopsies
Referrals will be triaged according to urgency defined by three priority categories:
- Category 1: Urgent (< 8 weeks)
- Category 2: Semi urgent (16 to 32 weeks)
- Category 3: Next available (> 12 months)
Referrals will be triaged and referrers and the patient will receive notification. Category 1 will receive an appointment date and time. Category 2 and 3 will be sent an acknowledgement letter and placed on a waiting list.
Referrals are not able to be accepted for routine skin surveillance and cosmetic management of benign skin lesions (e.g. skin tags, milia, seborrhoeic keratoses). Please arrange an alternative referral for your patient.
Unit staff include part time visiting dermatologists, four registrars, a Dermatology Nurse Practitioner Trainee, Registered and Enrolled Nurses, clerical and a half time medical intern.
In addition to caring for inpatients and running an outpatient clinic, FMC also has a Day Dermatology Unit. This facility has been established to assist people who require phototherapy or dermatology treatment in a day care setting allowing flexibility with treatment without being an inpatient.
Research programs currently include Psoriasis and Atopic Eczema. For information about current trials or participating in research, please contact our Dermatology Nurse Consultant.
