Local community

Do you live in a community where people of all ages have the opportunity to be active and feel supported to make healthy food choices?

There’s a lot going on across our State at a local level to promote healthy lifestyles and to make the healthy choice the easy choice:

  • OPAL (Obesity Prevention and Lifestyle) is a program that supports children, through their families and communities, to be healthy now, and stay healthy for life. OPAL is currently active in 12 South Australian communities and one community in the Northern Territory.
  • The Community Kitchen Gardens Project has been set up across the State to encourage and support community members to grow, gather and share food together.
  • Our Healthy Communities section provides community groups, services and local businesses with the tools and information they need to promote health and vibrancy in the local community.
  • Supermarkets can play a vital role in guiding the shopper towards healthier shopping byproviding and promoting a large range ofhealthy foods and drinks in their store.

Your Local Council plays an important role in creating healthy communities by offering a wide range of services which are determined by the need and priorities of their community. Local Councils provide health and wellbeing opportunities through the planning and development and the provision and management of services and facilities of the local area.
