HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is the use of antiretroviral medications to prevent human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission. Clinical trials from around the world have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of PrEP at reducing HIV transmission among people at medium to high-risk of acquiring HIV.

Accessing PrEP

For Australian residents with a current Medicare card, HIV PrEP is subsidised by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). Eligible Australians with a prescription for PrEP from their General Practitioner or sexual health clinic may access PrEP from a community pharmacy.

Individuals without a Medicare card may purchase HIV PrEP from overseas for personal use under the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) personal importation scheme.
