APY Lands meningococcal W vaccination program
The APY Lands Meningococcal W Vaccination Program is a ‘once off’ vaccination program against meningococcal serogroup W (MenW) disease that will be offered to people living in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands. The program is in response to an increase in recent months of meningococcal infection caused by a particular type of the bacteria, ‘serogroup W’, in Central Australia including the APY Lands.
Who can receive the vaccination?
The vaccine will be offered free of charge to persons two months of age and older who live in the APY Lands
If you live in the APY Lands but are travelling, you cannot receive your vaccine elsewhere in Australia. The vaccinations are only available for free in the APY Lands.
If someone does not live in the APY Lands, but would like to be vaccinated against MenW, they will need to contact their local GP or health service and pay to receive the vaccination.
Where can you get the free vaccination?
Vaccinations will be available through the Nganampa Health Council clinics. The clinics are locatedin Amata, Fregon, Iwantja, Mimili, Nyapari, Pipalyatjara and Pukatja (Ernabella).
Had your Meningococcal B and C vaccinations? You will still need your MenW
This meningococcal W vaccination is completely different to the vaccine being offered to year 10, 11 and 12 students as part of the Meningococcal B “B Part of It” study.
Children who received their meningococcal C vaccination at 12 month of age will still need to receive their meningococcal W vaccination as part of this program.
