Pregnancy Advisory Centre

The Pregnancy Advisory Centre is a service of SA Health's Central Adelaide Local Health Network and was established in 1992 for residents only living in South Australia.

Confidential interpreting services for women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are also available.

Opening hours

Opening hours are Monday to Friday 8.00am to 4.00pm and to make an appointment, from 9.00am to 4.00pm.

It is necessary to make an appointment prior to attending the Pregnancy Advisory Centre by contacting (08) 8243 3999.

Waiting for an appointment can be a stressful time; if you no longer need your scheduled appointment, let us know by calling or leaving a message at the Pregnancy Advisory Centre to cancel, or you can email  HealthPAC@sa.gov.au including your name, date of birth with your appointment day and time.

The Pregnancy Advisory Centre provides the following services to South Australian residents:

Important information

  • it is necessary to make an appointment prior to attending the Pregnancy Advisory Centre
  • bring your current Medicare card and/or Health Care card
  • some services have co-payments and the costs that apply will be discussed with you beforehand
  • you will require two visits to the Pregnancy Advisory Centre.

Flinders Medical Centre

Services provided at the Family Advisory Unit

What women need to know about services at the Flinders Medical Centre

  • Referrals are not required to attend for services at the Family Advisory Unit
  • Flinders Medical Centre offers an early medication abortion service up to 9 weeks gestation and a surgical abortion service up to 15 weeks gestation
  • Consultation appointments are available on Tuesday mornings
  • Abortion procedures occur on alternate Thursday mornings                       
  • Women who do not have a Medicare card can obtain a service from the Flinders Medical Centre and the costs that apply will be discussed with you beforehand
  • Please bring your Medicare card or Health Care card on the day of your procedure
  • You must have a responsible person over 18 to take you home and stay with you overnight following your procedure

What women need to do before a consultation at the Family Advisory Unit

  • Before any procedure, your health information is required for Family Advisory Unit staff to discuss with you when you attend for a consultation
  • Specific Client Information can either be collected or posted out to you for completion
  • Included in the Client Information is a pathology form with instructions for you to have blood and urine tests at a SA Pathology clinic before you attend at your confirmed appointment
  • Staff of the Family Advisory Unit will do an ultrasound scan at the time of your consultation.

Noarlunga Hospital

What women need to know about services at the Noarlunga Hospital

  • Referrals are not required to attend for services at the Family Advisory Unit
  • Noarlunga hospital offers a surgical procedure from 6 to 12 weeks gestation
  • A same day service is available on Fridays, with the consultation in the morning and procedure in the afternoon
  • You will need to confirm your appointment by telephone on the Wednesday between 11.00am and 1.00pm on the week of your scheduled procedure on a Friday
  • Phone the Noarlunga hospital on (08) 8384 9233 for direct contact with bookings officer
  • Failure to confirm your appointment will result in the appointment being cancelled
  • Please bring your Medicare card or Health Care card on the day of your procedure
  • Women who do not have a Medicare card can obtain a service at the Noarlunga hospital and the costs that apply will be discussed with you beforehand
  • You must have a responsible person over 18 to take you home and stay with you overnight following your procedure

What women need to do before a consultation at the Family Advisory Unit

  • Before any procedure, your health information is important for Family Advisory Unit staff to be able to discuss with you when you attend for a consultation
  • Specific Client Information will be posted out to you for completion prior to your appointment
  • A separate green consent form requires a signature from a GP and must be brought with you on the day of your procedure
  • Included in the Client Information is a pathology form with instructions for you to have blood and urine tests at a SA Pathology clinic before you attend at your confirmed appointment
  • Staff of the Family Advisory Unit will do an ultrasound scan at the time of your consultation
  • On the Wednesday that you confirm your appointment the nurse at the Family Advisory Unit will speak with you about what to expect on the day of your procedure and check that all the forms and tests required before the procedure have been completed.

What women need to know about services at the Lyell McEwin Hospital

  • Referrals are not required to attend for services at the Family Advisory Unit
  • Lyell McEwin hospital offers a surgical procedure from 6 to 12 weeks gestation
  • A same day service is available on Tuesday’s, with the consultation appointment in the morning between 8.30am to 11.30am and procedures in the afternoon from 1.00pm
  • You can ring for an appointment Monday to Friday during business hours
  • You can ring for an appointment on any day of the week during business hours
  • You will need to confirm your appointment by telephone on the previous Thursday between 8.00am and 12.00pm before your scheduled procedure the following Tuesday
  • Phone the Lyell McEwin hospital on (08 8182 9000 and ask for the Family Planning Midwife to be paged
  • Failure to confirm your appointment will result in the appointment being cancelled
  • Please bring your Medicare card and Health Care card on the day of your procedure      
  • Women who do not have a Medicare card can obtain a service from the Lyell McEwinhospital and the costs that apply will be discussed with you beforehand
  • If you are planning to access contraception on the day of your procedure, please discuss this with the nurse at the time of confirming your appointment, so that the options and any costs can be explained to you prior to attending for your procedure
  • You must have a responsible person over 18 to take you home and stay with you overnight following your procedure

What women need to do before a consultation at the Family Advisory Clinic

  • Before any procedure, your health information is required for Family Advisory Clinic staff to discuss with you when you confirm your appointment
  • Specific Client Information will be posted out to you for completion prior to your appointment
  • Included in the Client Information is a pathology form with instructions for you to have blood and urine tests at a SA Pathology clinic before you attend at your confirmed appointment
  • Staff of the Family Advisory Clinic will do an ultrasound scan at the time of your consultation
  • On the Thursday that you confirm your appointment, the nurse at the Family Advisory Clinic will speak with you about what to expect on the day of your procedure and complete a Patient Health Questionnaire and Anaesthetic / Surgical Assessment; takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

What women need to know about services at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital

  • Referrals are not required to attend for services at the Family Advisory Unit
  • The Women’s and Children’s hospital offers an early medication abortion service up to 9 weeksgestation and a surgical abortion service up to 12 weeks gestation
  • Consultation appointments are available on Tuesday mornings
  • Abortion procedures occur on alternate Thursday afternoons
  • You will need to attend the Social Work department to make an appointment and obtain the required information prior to attending for that appointment
  • Women who do not have a Medicare card can obtain a service from the Women’s and Children’s hospital and the costs that apply will be discussed with you beforehand
  • Please bring your Medicare card or Health Care card on the day of your procedure
  • You must have a responsible person over 18 to take you home and stay with you overnight following your procedure
  • A same day service for women from regional areas of South Australia is available on alternate Thursday’s with the consultation appointment in the morning and procedure in the afternoon.
