Cardiac Surgery

The Cardiac & Thoracic Surgery Unit (CTSU) provides surgical management of a variety of different cardiovascular and thoracic conditions including ischaemic heart disease, valvular disease (both valve replacement and repair, including for rheumatic heart disease), aortic disease (including valve-sparing aortic surgery), adult congenital heart conditions, some paediatric procedures (at Women's and Children's Hospital) and both benign and malignant lung and other chest disease.

CTSU is co-located within FMC and Flinders Private Hospital and undertakes around 700 cardiac and 300 thoracic procedures each year, working closely with Cardiology and Respiratory Medicine to provide a complete process of care for cardiac and thoracic patients within Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) as well as patients from the Northern Territory. CTSU has particular expertise in cardiac surgery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. In collaboration with Interventional Cardiology, CTSU is also a leader in trans-catheter valve procedures. In addition, CTSU is the referral centre for South Australia and the Northern Territory for extraction of pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator devices in the event of complications.

CTSU has a research team lead by Professor Robert Baker. The research team is widely recognised for its commitment to high quality evidence-based practice in cardiac surgery and extracorporeal technology (cardiopulmonary bypass). Particular interests include the psychological impact of cardiac surgery (and associated depression and anxiety states), benefits of off-pump coronary surgery, cardiac surgery in indigenous Australians, blood transfusion minimisation, and expertise in data collection and management. More information is available at http://www.flinders.edu.au/medicine/sites/csr.

CTSU provides a 24 hr emergency service in addition to elective surgery.

Clinics

Specialist new consultations (by referral) are arranged through the Cardiac & Thoracic Surgical Unit. Patients are seen either at Flinders Private Hospital or at Ashford Specialist Centre.
