SAAS MedSTAR Highlights 2012 - 2013

  • Development of a customised iPhone/iPad Application (App) for MedSTAR operational teams.
  • MedSTAR has twelve staff who hold University Adjunct Titles for their contribution and work in post graduate teaching or education.
  • MedSTAR has eight doctors trained for Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) who are able to be deployed by the State in an emergency.
  • Launch of the MedSTAR Kids ambulance by the Minister for Health and Ageing to improve service delivery to neonatal and paediatric patients.
  • MedSTAR achieved first place in The Aeromedical Society of Australasia and Flight Nurses Australia, 24th Scientific Meeting, Sim Cup competition.
  • Coordination and management of all Inter-hospital transfers is now through the SA Ambulance Service  Emergency Operations Centre by dedicated MedSTAR staff.
  • Dr Andrew Pearce, Clinical Director, Training and Education was awarded the SA Emergency Services Medal in 2012.
  • Implementation of SACAD, GRS and MDT technology to improve tasking and continue our journey of integration with SA Ambulance Service.
  • Production of a soft plush toy helicopter i.e. ‘RED”, for use by MedSTAR Kids staff to improve the experience for Paediatric patients.
  • Critical Care Procedures introduced for MedSTAR Kids staff to improve clinical care for patients.
  • Negotiation and launch of new Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) contract for a fixed wing platform to help us deliver emergency medical retrievals and inter-hospital transfers.
  • Completion of Health Workforce Australia, Simulation Learning Environment grant project resulting in training simulation units, a mobile extrication unit and associated high fidelity training equipment.
  • Medical Retrieval Consultants (MRC’s) are now trained for Bronze/Silver Medical Command /Major Medical Incident Command in a major incident.
