New Emergency Extended Care Unit at Modbury Hospital
Short stay patients who are expected to spend between four and 24 hours in hospital will soon be treated in a new, specialised facility at Modbury Hospital.
More than $9 million is being invested to build an Emergency Extended Care Unit (EECU) at the hospital, alongside the existing Emergency Department.
The Unit will include eight additional beds and provide observation and treatment spaces for emergency patients who require further care, allowing clinicians to monitor and evaluate patients in an advanced facility, close to but separate from the main ED.
Jim Wolf was treated in the Lyell McEwin Hospital EECU in early 2017 following complications from knee surgery and understands the benefits of being treated in a specially designed facility.
“The EECU was a nice, quiet space away from the main ED. It was very comfortable – I was very relaxed and everyone was very friendly,” Jim said.
“I think it will be great for Modbury Hospital to have a similar space for the benefit of patients like me.”
Construction of the new EECU at Modbury Hospital is expected to begin in 2018.
