More emergency beds at Lyell McEwin Hospital

The number of emergency beds at Lyell McEwin Hospital is set to double following the creation of a new, bigger, world-class Emergency Department (ED) at the hospital.

More than $50 million is being invested to create the new ED, with construction expected to begin in 2018.

The new ED will have more than double the number of adult assessment cubicles, an increase in the number of resuscitation bays and a separate, dedicated area for substance abuse patients. There will also be an increase in the number of paediatric assessment cubicles and a dedicated waiting room for children and families.

Local resident, Jess Warren, said the expansion is reassuring for her as a first time mum.

“I feel comforted to know that if my child needed emergency care, Lyell McEwin Hospital has the right facilities and a dedicated treatment area for children,” Jess said.

“It’s great that there’s going to be even more space to treat children in the Emergency Department once it’s expanded.”
