Blood programs

Blood, Organ and Tissue Programs, within the Public Health and Clinical Coordination Division of the Department for  Health and Ageing, is responsible for overseeing blood and blood product use within South Australia. Our role is to lead strategic direction and policy in regard to the use of blood and blood products to ensure best possible outcomes for all South Australians.

Blood and blood products include:

  • fresh products such as whole blood, red cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate and cryo-depleted plasma
  • plasma-derived products such as albumin, immunoglobulins and clotting factors
  • recombinant (manufactured) products such as clotting factors
  • diagnostic reagent products for laboratory testing and screening.

Under national arrangements, blood and blood products are jointly funded by the States and Territories (37%) and the Commonwealth (63%) under a cost share arrangement. Products are supplied, free of charge, to patients in both the public and private sectors.

The South Australian Department for  Health and Ageing works in collaboration with the National Blood Authority and the local health sector to optimise the use of blood and blood products.
