Standards and accreditation for safety and quality in healthcare

SA Health recognises accreditation as an important driver for safety and quality improvement. Through a process of regular assessment and review, accreditation tests that systems are in place and working effectively to promote and support safe patient care and continuous quality improvement.

From 1 January 2013 the Australian Health Service Safety and Quality Accreditation (AHSSQA) Scheme will be in place. Within this scheme it is mandatory for health services to be accredited against the ten National Safety and Quality Health Services Standards (the Standards). Each Standard has a Safety and Quality Improvement Guide.

The SA Health Accreditation Policy Directive (PDF 1.2MB) provides an outline of the mandatory requirements for health services to meet in order to be assessed and accredited against the NSQHS Standards, in compliance with the Australian Safety and Quality Health Service Accreditation Scheme and any other applicable standards.

There is an SA Health Accreditation Resource for each National Safety and Quality Health Service Standard which has been developed to support Health Services.  It provides examples of South Australian tools and resources that can be used to demonstrate an action and standard has been met.  Audit tools have also been developed for some standards.

The Australian Health Service Safety and Quality Accreditation Scheme (AHSSQA)

The Australian Health Service Safety and Quality Accreditation scheme builds on the strengths of the current accreditation arrangements and provides for the national coordination of accreditation processes.

The National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards were developed by the Australian Commission on Safety on Safety and Quality in Healthcare Commission (ACSQHC). The Standards provide a nationally consistent statement of the level of care consumers should be able to expect from health services across ten priority areas.
The Commission has developed a number of resources to assist health service organisations implement the NSQHS Standards. These resources include NSQHS Standards, Accreditation Workbooks and Safety and Quality Improvement Guides
