Perinatal Emergency Education Strategy

The SA Health Perinatal Emergency Education Strategy has been established to:

  • provide a coordinated strategic approach to the governance of education and training in perinatal emergency care
  • standardise training, providing sustainable and equitable education and ongoing professional development to deliver positive perinatal outcomes across SA Health.

The aim of the Strategy is to:

  • improve the quality of care to all pregnant women and newborn infants
  • improve access to services
  • provide linkages to an appropriate level of care
  • optimise the continuity of care across the system.

The Strategy outlines several areas of education to respond to significant adverse outcomes. These areas are:

  • basic neonatal life support
  • advanced neonatal life support
  • detection and care of the deteriorating neonate
  • interpretation and management of fetal monitoring
  • management of perinatal maternal emergencies.

Policy Directive

SA Health has released a Perinatal Emergency Education Strategy Policy Directive (PDF 679KB) which describes the minimum training requirements for groups of staff working in and delivering obstetric and neonatal services and who may be called upon to assist or manage an emergency situation. SA Health Safety and Quality have introduced standardised multi professional training in obstetric emergency management, fetal surveillance and neonatal resuscitation to improve obstetric and neonatal outcomes through improved teamwork, communication and development of clinical skills.

Minimum training requirements

All staff working in perinatal services are required to complete mandatory training. The minimum level of training depends on your position classification. See the Training requirements for staff working in perinatal services (PDF 80KB) for further information.

Training is offered across the Local Health Networks and Country Health SA LHN. Refer to the Perinatal Emergency Map (PDF 77KB) for more information.

Training equipment

To efficiently deliver and manage the Perinatal Emergency Education Program, a guideline has been developed outlining the minimum equipment requirements (PDF 129KB) in Local Health Networks and Country Health SA hubs. The guideline also identifies the location of key pieces of equipment required along with contact details of the person responsible for the piece of equipment.
