Aboriginal initiatives at Southern Adelaide Local Health Network

Aboriginal Learning Centre

The Aboriginal Learning Centre has been established to assist the Aboriginal community and Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) staff to get involved in health study pathways in the Vocational Education Training sector, University programs or the up skilling of existing staff.

The Aboriginal Learning Centre will assist the Aboriginal community and Southern Adelaide Local Health Network staff to complete courses in a culturally appropriate environment.  The Aboriginal Learning Centre is working with management to best deliver courses in times when service delivery to the community is not affected.

For more information please contact the Regional Manager, Aboriginal Employment, Workforce Support and Development, Southern Adelaide Local Health Network on telephone (08) 8201 7572.

Aboriginal Pre-Employment Program

The Aboriginal Pre-Employment Program (APEP) assists in creating ‘Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) ready’ applicants for potential appointment to our health service. The program is offered on a quarterly basis and is a four week intensive activity that covers components specifically related to working within the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network.

The APEP program is currently implemented in the metropolitan areas and targets the Central Adelaide, Southern Adelaide and Northern Adelaide LHN’s.

Bonded Aboriginal Medical Scholarship Scheme

The Southern Adelaide Local Health Network Bonded Aboriginal Medical Scholarship Scheme is an initiative of the SA Department for Health and Ageing in partnership with Flinders University.  The scholarship includes a two-year placement at hospitals in the southern Adelaide metropolitan region.

This scholarship program aims to increase the number of professionally qualified Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors working in the South Australian public health sector.

Successful applicants will receive up to $12,500 per semester of full time study (up to $25,000 per annum for a maximum of four years).

Scholarships will be awarded on the recommendation of a selection committee comprising Southern Adelaide Local Health Network and Flinders University Medical School representatives.

When assessing an applicant’s application, the committee will consider:

  • whether the applicant has completed any part of the stated course;
  • the applicant’s academic merit based on results achieved; and
  • reports from referees regarding that applicant’s previous work and suitability for a career in medicine.

Applicants must provide with their application:

  • a letter of acceptance or enrolment in the Graduate Entry Medical Program at Flinders University and evidence of full time study load;
  • details of past and present studies, work experience, awards, personal development work, career path and any involvement in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities; and confirmation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.
