Consultation on draft model of care for older persons mental health services

An expert working group with clinical and industrial representation, under the auspices of SA Health Oakden Response Plan Oversight Committee, has developed a draft model of care for older persons mental health services.

The model of care has been developed through thorough and extensive consultation and research into evidence-based best practice. Consultation feedback fed directly into the development process, ensuring a focus on “right care, right time, right place, first time” and resulting in an overarching framework that encompasses three tailored models of care to meet the specific needs of the three major patient cohorts:

  • people with extreme behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), including people under 65 with early-onset dementia
  • people with severe BPSD, including people under 65 with early-onset dementia
  • older people with complex, enduring mental illnesses (such as psychotic or severe affective disorders).

The framework outlines pathways for an older person with complex care needs to move between different levels of service in response to changes in their health status, across public health and non-government residential aged care sectors, minimising disruption to the person and their carers.

Until the draft model of care has been endorsed and implemented, existing services will continue to provide acute and transitional care for consumers presenting with severe and extreme BPSD.

The draft model of care is now available (PDF 637KB).
