More than 3000 attend meningococcal W clinics

Wednesday, 29 March 2017

More than 3000 people from across the Ceduna district have received their meningococcal W vaccine during a free immunisation program over the past month.

SA Health Chief Medical Officer, Professor Paddy Phillips said the clinics were held in response to several recent cases of the disease locally and aimed to help boost immunity in the region.

“Evidence show that immunisation is the most effective way to prevent infectious diseases,” Professor Phillips said.

“The community response to this meningococcal W immunisation program has been amazing and will go a long way in preventing further cases of this disease.”

Ceduna Hospital Director of Nursing Andrew Lane said some clinics will continue to offer free Meningococcal W vaccinations for those residents who missed the initial sessions, or those with young children requiring a follow-up vaccine.

“These clinics will be available for people living in Ceduna, Thevenard, Denial Bay, Koonibba, Smoky Bay, Yalata, Oak Valley, Scotdesco and Penong,” Mr Lane said.

“People can either drop-in or call to book a time and the vaccination should only take 10 minutes. Please bring your driver’s license, or an ID card with your address, along with your Medicare card when you come.”

Immunisation clinics are located at:

  • Ceduna GP Plus (8.30am-5pm, Monday to Friday)
  • Ceduna Koonibba Aboriginal Health Service (9am-5pm, Monday to Friday)
  • Tullawon Health Service (9am-5pm, Monday to Friday)
  • Oak Valley Health Service (9am-5pm, Monday to Friday)

Prior to December 2016, there had not been a notified case of meningococcal W disease in the Ceduna region since records started in 1990.
