Healthy eyes focus of Tarpari Wellbeing Day
Healthy eyes are the focus of the upcoming Tarpari Wellbeing Day in Port Pirie, with organisers hoping a record number of people attend the all-day event.
Aboriginal Health Team Leader at the Port Pirie Regional Health Service, Barbara Daw, said Tarpari Wellbeing Day is a major event in the region with up to 2,000 people attending and more than 40 government and non-government agencies, local businesses and support organisations involved.
“Tarpari Wellbeing Day is a fantastic initiative that celebrates Aboriginal cultures and promotes good health and wellbeing in the community,” Ms Daw said.
“The theme of this year’s Tarpari Wellbeing Day is ‘Looking Forward – New beginnings’, which focuses on raising awareness about the causes of poor eye health and promotes preventative measures.
“The event has been hugely successful in the past, resulting in the community paying closer attention to their overall health and wellbeing, so we’re hoping more than 3,000 people will attend this year’s event.”
There will be a huge range of stalls on site including SA Dental offering free toothpaste and toothbrushes, Australian Hearing offering free hearing checks, and the Aboriginal Health Council of SA Eye Program offering free basic vision tests.
There will also be dance performances, Aboriginal art displays, giveaways, sporting and craft activities for children, a free barbecue and information about career options for young people.
Tarpari Wellbeing Day, coordinated by Port Pirie Regional Health Service’s Aboriginal Health Team, is held every two years to promote health and increase awareness of the services available to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and wider community.
“I am very excited for this year’s event as we have many wonderful stall holders to share health messages and important information, as well as fun activities for the community to enjoy,” Ms Daw said.
“This is an important day for the community and a huge amount of work has gone into ensuring it is an informative day, as well as a fun one".
Tarpari Wellbeing Day will be held at the Memorial Park in Port Pirie on Wednesday, 18 April from 10am until 2pm.
