Country hospitals thanked for exceptional support during historic new RAH move

27 November 2017

Country hospitals have been officially acknowledged for the outstanding support staff provided during the historic move to the new Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Country Health SA Chief Executive Officer Maree Geraghty said on Friday, Gumeracha Hospital hosted an event to thank staff at peri-urban hospitals that provided critical support during the three-week ramp down period.

“It was a good opportunity for staff to get together and reflect on Country Health SA’s involvement during the ramp down, and I personally thanked people for their dedication, commitment and hard work during this busy time,” Ms Geraghty said.

“From August 14 until the new Royal Adelaide Hospital opened, there were 187 patient transfers to country hospitals across the State.

“The majority of these (128) were transferred to peri-urban hospitals at Angaston, Eudunda, Gawler, Gumeracha, Kapunda, Mount Barker, Mount Pleasant, South Coast, Strathalbyn, Tanunda and Murray Bridge.

“While the number of patient transfers was higher than we initially anticipated, our hospitals and staff were well prepared and well equipped to accept the extra patients during this once-in-a-century event.”

During the ramp-down, country hospitals put additional systems in place to ensure extra patients could be accommodated.

Ms Geraghty said the patients transferred from Adelaide hospitals to country sites included non-urgent patients and some post-acute long-stay patients.

“Patients were assessed and only transferred to country hospitals where appropriate, to receive ongoing care closer to home and their loved ones,” she said.

“I’d like to thank all of our doctors, nurses and allied health staff who worked tirelessly in the lead up to and during the ramp down, to ensure we provided the best possible patient care at all times.

“At any given time, around 17 per cent of patients in Adelaide hospitals – including the new Royal Adelaide Hospital – are from the country.

“Metro hospitals are always willing to support our patients when they require acute management or further investigations, and so we were proud and only too willing to help out during the once-in-a-lifetime hospital move.”
