Caring with Kindness: The Nursing and Midwifery Professional Practice Framework
The Chief Nurse and Midwifery Officer, Lydia Dennett, released the SA Health Nursing and Midwifery Professional Practice Framework (PDF 2MB), at the Advisory Forum held on 23 September 2014.
The first of the strategic priorities identified in the Nursing and Midwifery Strategic Commitment 2016-2018 is 'Caring with Kindness' which is about ensuring that care and compassion are at the heart of the nursing and midwifery professions and are intrinsic to how the fundamentals of care are provided to patients.
The flagship objective for this priority is to:
‘Identify/construct and implement a framework that transforms the way that fundamental care is delivered at the point of care.’
The Nursing and Midwifery Professional Practice Framework supports the achievement of this objective and has been developed to provide the mechanism to guide the professional practice requirements for nursing and midwifery across SA Health.
The Framework has been developed to align with the requirement for National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (NSQHSS) for accreditation and to recognise the practice development work already being undertaken across SA Health. This approach establishes the Framework as a means for providing evidence of achievement against the (NSQHSS) and to identify and share achievements and minimise duplication of activities and documentation. It also reflects the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Strategic Framework (NMSF) across all 5 Strategic Priorities.
As cultural change is fundamental to the achievement of NMSF Strategic Priority 2 - People and Culture, ‘Clearly articulate and describe the desired culture and embed it in daily practice so that it lives and breathes’ the Professional Practice Framework also identifies the required values, and associated behaviours that underpin the desired culture.
The Nursing and Midwifery Professional Practice Framework has been significantly influenced by the information and ideas that nurses and midwives provided through for example, participation and feedback in the Advisory Forum, and Professional Development Committee.
To support the implementation of the Caring with Kindness: The Nursing and Midwifery Professional Practice Framework, an interactive resource has been developed. The interactive resource was released at an official launch on the 30 March 2015 and is now available for use by SA Health nurse and midwifery staff.
How to use the resource
The interactive resource (PDF 1.3MB) includes instructions within the document on how to use the resource. This resource should be saved electronically to a file to enable continuous access and updating as required by users. Each Local Health Network will determine the governance process required to support the utilisation of the resource.
For more information about this governance process contact the Nursing and Midwifery Executive Team at your Local Health Network.
