Veterans' Health Advisory Council (VHAC)

The Veterans’ Health Advisory Council (VHAC) advises the Minister on health issues of veterans, war idows and their families and advocates on their behalf.

The VHAC was established by the Minister for Health in 2009 as one of a number of Health Advisory Councils (HACs). The Council’s function and operations are defined by a set of rules (similar to a constitution) determined by the Minister.

Council members are appointed by the Minister. All current VHAC members are volunteers and include Reservists from Navy, Army and Air Force as well as ex-serving veterans and medical specialists who deal with veterans.

The VHAC meets at least four times a year.

Priorities

The VHAC’s priorities are:

  • Work with SA Health in the development of the Veteran Wellbeing Action Plan 2023-26, following a review of the Framework for Veterans Health Care 2016-2020.
  • To maintain a watching brief on the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide and to recommend appropriate actions.
