Health information for the clinician

SA Health is committed to providing health professionals with relevant and up-to-date resources.

Communicable diseases

For more information about communicable diseases visit SA Health’s Communicable Disease Control Branch.

Information on infectious diseases and simple practical advice for preventing their transmission in the home and community can be downloaded from You’ve Got What.

For information about notifiable diseases, links to the legislation, latest statistics, forms and listings visit the Notification of Communicable Disease web page.

You are obliged by the Public and Environmental Health Act, 1987 to notify SA Health of people suspected of having notifiable diseases. The ‘Report of notifiable disease or related death form’ can be downloaded, completed and either posted or faxed to the Communicable Disease Control Branch (CDCB). To ensure confidentiality, please do not email the completed form.

To notify AIDS, HIV, hepatitis B or C or sexually transmitted infections to the STD Control Branch: a special notification form will be forwarded automatically to the doctor upon a positive laboratory result.

All notifications are recorded and followed-up appropriately.

Reporting these diseases enables the CDCB to monitor and investigate them, in order to prevent spread and reduce their impact on the community.

This law means that for the first time in Australia, 10 health professions are regulated by nationally consistent legislation.

AHPRA supports the 10 National Boards that are responsible for regulating the 10 health professions. The primary role of the Boards is to protect the public and they set standards and policies that all registered health practitioners must meet.
