Appropriate use of blood and blood products

BloodSafe is a blood transfusion safety and quality improvement process to ensure the availability of a sufficient blood supply for South Australians in need of transfusion therapy.

The program is a collaboration between SA Health and:

  • Transfusion Medicine Services of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service
  • transfusion service providers
  • South Australian public and private hospitals.

All facets of blood transfusion practice – from patient identification protocols to cold chain management - have been addressed to improve the outcomes of patients receiving transfusions.

Dedicated BloodSafe Transfusion Nurse Consultants work in public and private hospitals across the State to:

  • promote the appropriate use of blood and blood products
  • provide education around the administration of blood and blood products
  • conduct audits of appropriate use of blood and blood products and
  • to develop tools to assist in the management, prescribing and administration of blood and blood products.

The BloodSafe Team is supported by a Nursing Advisor and a Medical Advisor who are based at the Australian Red Cross Blood Service.
