Office of the Chief Psychiatrist and Mental Health Policy

The position of Chief Psychiatrist in South Australia is established under the Mental Health Act 2009, which came into force on 1 July 2010.

The role of the Chief Psychiatrist is to:

  • safeguard the rights of individuals
  • improve service delivery
  • guide the administration of the Act
  • monitor standards and services.

The Chief Psychiatrist reports to the Executive Director, Mental Health and Substance Abuse within SA Health.

What the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist and Mental Health Policy does

To support the Chief Psychiatrist in that role, the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist and Mental Health Policy has been created to manage:

  • the administration of the Act
  • legislation and policy
  • reporting and advice
  • safety and quality
  • standards and guidelines
  • use of orders and cross-border arrangements.
